West Indies spinner Sunil Narine became the first cricketer to receive a red card for his team's slow over rate during the match between Trinbago Knight Riders and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2023.

The issue of slow-over rates has disrupted the game as many times a match goes over its stipulated time.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has also introduced fines in all three formats and also points deductions in the World Test Championship.

The CPL organisers also came up with a solution to tackle the problem of slow-over rates this season and introduced a red-card rule.

The fielding side would be shown a red card if they are found to be behind schedule at the start of the final over of an inning.

The sanction also means that the fielding side loses a player, which will be decided by the captain and will be forced to have six fielders inside the circle.

Since Narine had already completed his quota of four overs, he was sent off the field by his captain.

Knight Riders had to field with just 10 men for the final over in the first inning but they won the match by six wickets as Nicholas Pooran played an exceptional knock scoring 61 off 32 balls, helping his team register their first victory in three games.

Knight Riders' skipper Kieren Pollard wasn't happy with the over-rate penalty and opened up about the incident after the match.

“To be honest, it will take away the hard work everyone has done,” he said. “We are like the pawns and we are going to do what we are told.

“We are going to play as fast as we can. If you are penalised for 30-45 seconds in a tournament like this, it is absolutely ridiculous,” he added
