Canada defeated the Republic of Ireland 2-1 after a very close contest at the Perth Rectangular Stadium, Australia on Wednesday.
Ireland started the game on a positive by taking a lead in the 4th minute through Katie McCabe's sensational goal directly from the corner, scoring her country’s first-ever Women’s World Cup goal.
Ireland’s domination continued in the first half but they met with an unfortunate incident as the defender Megan Connolly scored an owl goal against her team in the additional minutes just before half-time.
The much-needed relief raised the Canadians’ spirits and just nine after the second half started, they took the lead with Adriana Leon scoring from a close range.
The match ended 2-1 with Canada’s victory, helping them sit on top of their group with four points.
On the other hand, Spain secured their place in the knockout phase of the Women’s World Cup after battering Zambia 5-0 with a game in hand.
Spain’s tournament charge keep on going as the Spaniards now seem unstoppable with two dominating wins in the first two matches.
Teresa Abelleira opened the scoring for La Roja with a stunner from outside the box which is now a strong contender for Goal of the Tournament.
Jennifer Hermoso and Alba Redondo then scored two goals each to secure a five-goal victory.
Spain completely dominated the game in all aspects, having 22 shots (13 on target), and 76% possession while making 717 passes with an 86% accuracy, leaving no chance for the African country to get back in the game.
Spain will now take on Japan on July 31 which will be the last group-stage match for both teams and with six points, both teams have already qualified for the knockout stages and can rest their important players to avoid any injury.
It must be noted that La Roja is unbeaten in their last eight official games. Their last defeat came against Australia in February 2023.
