Day one of the opening Ashes Test has ended with Australia scoring 14-0 at the stumps in Edgbaston.

David Warner (8) and Usman Khawaja (4) will resume batting for the Aussies on day two.

Earlier, England declared their first innings after posting 393 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 78 overs.

Joe Root remained unbeaten as he scored a spectacular hundred with 118 runs, courtesy of seven fours and four sixes.

England started the innings following their “Bazball” brand as Zack Crawley smashed Australian skipper Pat Cummins for a four on the first ball of the innings.

Ben Duckett headed back to the pavilion after scoring just 12 runs as he fell prey to Josh Hazlewood leaving England 22-1.

Ollie Pope could not save himself from Nathan Lyon as the spinner took him out after scoring 31 off 44 as England lost their second wicket at 92 runs.

Harry Brook lost his wicket, after scoring 32 off 37 with four boundaries, in a bizarre way as Lyon's short-of-length delivery got extra bounce and hit Brook's thigh pad and then hit the wicket after staying in the air for some time.

Soon after Brook’s departure, England’s skipper Ben Stokes lost his wicket to Hazlewood in the next over. Bairstow then lost his wicket after scoring 78 off 78 thanks to 12 fours as he was stumped by Alex Carey on Lyon’s ball.

Moeen Ali was also stumped by Carey on Lyon’s delivery after scoring just 18 runs on 17 balls while Broad was bowled by Green.

Root and Bairstow registered a 121-run partnership to make sure that their team didn’t fall early to Australia’s bowling attack.

Hazlewood, who replaced Mitchell Starc, bagged two wickets for 61 runs in 15 overs. Lyon got four as he conceded 149 runs in 29 overs while hero of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against India, Scott Boland, only managed to get one wicket for 86 runs in 14 overs. Cameroon Green also took one wicket for 32 runs in six overs.
