Manchester United’s manager Erik ten Hag created history as he became the manager with the most wins in the debut season with his 38th victory after defeating Wolves on Saturday (May 13) in the English Premier League (EPL).
The record was previously held by Jose Mourinho who won 37 games in the 2016/17 season as well as winning Europa League, League Cup, and Community Shield.
The 20-time PL winner came into the game against Wolves after losing their last two Premier League games against Brighton and West Ham. A defeat against Wolves would have pretty much derailed their season but United bounced back with an impressive win.
United’s 2-0 win over Wolves was a huge victory in the race for the top four as they maintain a four-point lead over fifth-place Liverpool.
With three more games still remaining in the Premier League, Ten Hag’s men require just two victories to ensure a top-four finish after which they can prepare for the FA Cup final against city rivals Manchester City.
United is in fourth place in the points table, with 20 wins, six draws, and nine losses. They have a total of 66 points.
Earlier, Ten Hag said that his side can attract some of the best players in the world after finding it difficult to land some transfer targets last season.
“I see a big difference in comparison with last year. Now, many players see the project, what's going on, the dynamic and the ambition," Ten Hag told reporters before Saturday's home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
"There were a lot of reservations last year, doubts when we approached players. This year, many quality players really want to come."
United have signed Casemiro, Antony, Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen and Tyrell Malacia under Ten Hag. The club has also been linked with Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane in the recent past.
Ten Hag also said that his side is steadily progressing but admitted that expectations will rise next season.
"We have to rebuild and reconstruct," Ten Hag said. "We are in that process and in the right direction. You can see that in the way we play," he added.
