DHAKA: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officially confirmed on Thursday that Najmul Hossain Shanto has decided to resign from his role as the national T20I captain.
This follows his earlier indication that he would not continue in the position after the conclusion of the home series against South Africa.
Initially, Najmul had planned to step down from the T20I captaincy following the 2024 World Cup in the USA and West Indies.
However, after reconsideration, he expressed his desire to step away from leadership duties across all formats.
While the BCB had initially approved his decision, a twist occurred when BCB President Faruque Ahmed intervened, leading to Najmul's reinstatement as captain for the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan.
Unfortunately, an injury during the series disrupted his leadership tenure.
A senior BCB official said, "Shanto finally told us that he won't lead in the T20Is, and we accepted it. But since we don't have T20Is at the moment, we have time on hand, so we are not picking a new captain."
"If there is no injury issue, Najmul will remain the captain for Tests and ODIs, and we have discussed it," he added.
With the T20I captaincy vacant, the BCB is set to continue with Litton Das as captain for the format.
Litton, who recently led the team to a 3-0 series win over the West Indies, expressed his willingness to take on the T20I captaincy long-term.
He is expected to lead Bangladesh in the shortest format moving forward.
Although Mehedy Hasan had been a contender after filling in as stand-in captain during the West Indies tour, the BCB now confirmed that Najmul Hossain Shanto will continue as captain for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan.
