Karachi: Former Pakistan cricket captain Younis Khan has voiced his support for Fakhar Zaman’s inclusion in the national squad ahead of the highly anticipated Champions Trophy 2025.

Speaking during a media conference, Khan expressed his excitement about Pakistan hosting a major ICC cricket event for the first time in years.

"It is a welcome sign that the Champions Trophy matches are being held in Pakistan. For nine years, we played cricket outside Pakistan, but now we can enjoy the advantage of playing on home grounds," said Younis.

Khan, who captained Pakistan to victory in the 2009 T20 World Cup, also advocated for more cricket matches between India and Pakistan, emphasizing the importance of such high-stakes encounters for emerging players.

"My wish is for regular Pakistan-India cricket. Playing against India helps you become a big player, and I always talk about the importance of these high-stakes matchups," he added.

The 47-year-old strongly backed Fakhar Zaman's inclusion ahead of the prestigious tournament.

The opening batter last represented Pakistan in an international match during the T20 World Cup 2024 against Ireland in June.

He also expressed confidence in Pakistan's ability to score 400 runs if both Saim and Fakhar play together.

"Fakhar Zaman should definitely be in the team. If Fakhar and Saim play together, we can score 400 in a One-Day match. The PCB has acted wisely by supporting players who give their all for the team," Khan stated.

It is pertinent to mention that the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday announced the highly anticipated schedule for the men’s Champions Trophy 2025, slated to be hosted by Pakistan.

The eight-team tournament, comprising 15 matches, will run from February 19 to March 9 across three venues – Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi – in Pakistan and Dubai.

The eight teams are divided into two groups. Group A features Pakistan, India, New Zealand, and Bangladesh, while Group B includes Afghanistan, South Africa, England, and Australia.

Hosts Pakistan will take on New Zealand in the curtain-raiser on February 19 in Karachi, while the blockbuster clash between arch-rivals Pakistan and India is scheduled for February 23 in Dubai.
