Jake Fraser-McGurk is likely to travel with Australia’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 which will be played in the United States and West Indies from June 1, reported Sydney Morning Herald on Sunday.
Fraser-McGurk, 22, was on fire in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 while representing Delhi Capitals as the right-handed batter amassed 330 runs in just nine innings at an impressive strike rate of 234.04, which is fourth best in the tournament. He also hit 28 sixes in the tournament.
Australia’s selectors are set to call up two reserves for the World Cup and Fraser-McGurk will be one of them due to his impressive outing in India. The other travelling reserve would be gifted young wrist-spinner Tanveer Sangha as cover for Adam Zampa.
Fraser-McGurk’s inclusion as a travelling reserve is crucial as David Warner is suffering from a bone bruise in his hand while skipper Mitchell Marsh is still recovering from a hamstring injury.
Remember, Delhi Capitals’ head coach and former Australian captain, Ricky Ponting stated that he was surprised by the exclusion of the 22-year-old from the Aussies’ World Cup squad.
“Everyone's been pretty impressed with Jake Fraser Mcgurk, he's an ultra-talented kid, and I was a little surprised he was not included in the Australian squad. Had he and Travis Head walked out together it would have been something else," Ponting had said.
