FC Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez confirmed that he will leave the club after a thumping 5-3 loss against Villarreal at the Estadi Olimpic Lluís Companys on Saturday.
Xavi was under hot waters ever since the Blaugrana suffered a humiliating 4-1 loss against arch-rivals Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup.
The team was knocked out of Copa del Rey (CDR) after losing to Athletic Bilbao 4-2 and the loss against the Yellow Submarines turned out to be the final straw for the former midfielder.
"From June 30, I will not continue as Barca coach. As a Barca fan, I believe the club needs a change of dynamic," Xavi said in a post-match press conference. "I've been a man of the club. I've prioritised it above even myself. I've given everything I have."
"And I will continue to do so to make the fans feel proud."
He added: "For the good of the players, I believe that they will free themselves. We play with a lot of tension.
"For the good of the board of directors, it is best that I leave. I will give my best. I think all of that will help the dynamic change. This is the message I would like to give. I think I am doing the right thing."
Xavi stated that the job is very demanding and there is always pressure from the media, which makes it difficult for the manager to focus at times.
"In Barcelona, you always feel like you're not valued, you're mistreated - that's how the club works," he said.
"From a mental-health level, it's tough too. I am a positive guy, but the battery levels keep running out — and at some point, you realise there's no point in staying."
He then confirmed that even if Barcelona won the Champions League, his decision would not change.
"I wouldn't change my decision even if I won the Champions League. I will tell the players tomorrow. I'm the most responsible one, so the players will finally feel free now," he added.
