Luton Town announced on Thursday that their skipper, Tom Lockyer, was released from hospital from hospital and had started a period of rehabilitation from his home after a successful medical procedure.
The club confirmed that Lockyer an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) was fitted on the 29-year-old to make sure that it doesn’t happen again.
“We are thankful to report that our captain Tom Lockyer has now begun a period of rehabilitation from the comfort of his own home after he was discharged from hospital on Wednesday,” Luton Town said in a statement.
“This encouraging news follows a successful procedure that took place on Tuesday whereby Tom had an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) device fitted to prevent a repeat of Saturday’s incident.”
The club then went on to support Bournemouth’s medical team which rushed to the scene and their quick measures provided much-needed help to stabilise the player.
“Supported by the actions of Bournemouth’s medical team and local paramedics, it was ultimately the protocols instilled and professional actions of our own medical staff that gave Tom this chance to recover and to whom we are thankful,” it added.
It must be noted that Lockyer collapsed on the field during the 59th minute of the match against Bournemouth.
The 29-year-old fell to his knees with no one around him and the on-field players immediately rushed to see if the player was responsive or not.
The player got the required medical attention and was taken off the field after some time with the entire stadium giving a standing ovation to him.
Lockyer had a heart condition and underwent an operation to fix his irregular heartbeats. There were speculations that the Welsh footballer may never play football again but he was declared fit by the doctors and signed a contract extension with Luton Town.
Lockyer talked about his heart problems in the summer while talking to BBC where he confirmed that he has been given a yes by the doctors.
“I’ve had the operation to fix it and it shouldn’t happen again,” Lockyer told BBC. “There’s not really any reason to say why that happened. I’ve been given the all-clear – it is what it is and I just want to draw a line under it now and move on.”
“I’ve had my full heart checked and double-checked with all the scans and tests they can do on a heart, and they’ve all come back positive.”
