Former FC Barcelona and Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas began his managerial journey as he was appointed the interim head coach of Italian B side Como, the club announced on Monday.
Fabregas will be replacing Moreno Longo who was sacked by the club following their woeful performances in recent matches as they currently sit in sixth position in the Serie B points table.
"Como 1907 and Moreno Longo have parted company. The search for a new Head Coach begins immediately with Cesc Fabregas and the current coaching staff taking over duties for the interim period," the club said in an official statement.
"Following several months of strategic planning, the board decided that a dynamic change was in the best interests of the club. Longo joined Como in September 2022 where he helped the team avoid relegation finishing 13th last season. Cesc Fabregas who currently coaches Como 1907 Primavera will take his first training session on Wednesday morning."
The Spaniard's first match in charge will be against Feralpisalo after the international break on November 25.
Fabregas joined the Serie B side in August 2022 after leaving the French club A.S. Monaco as his time there was constantly interrupted by injuries. Soon after joining Como, the midfielder became a shareholder of the club alongside his former Arsenal and Barcelona teammate Thierry Henry.
He called time on his career on July 1, 2023, and decided to continue working for Como as a youth coach.
It must be noted that Fabregas is considered one of the best midfielders of the last 20 years. He started his career with the English club Arsenal at the age of 16 and went on to play 212 games for the Gunners before leaving for his boyhood club FC Barcelona.
However, his career with the Blaugrana wasn't long as despite being there for almost four years, he only featured in 94 matches and scored 28 goals.
After his on-and-off Barca stint, he joined another English club Chelsea and led them to the Premier League glory.
He also earned 110 international caps for Spain and was a regular part of the legendary team that created history and swept off three international tournaments consecutively by winning Euro 2008, World Cup 2010 and Euro 2012 again.
